[Features]Market Analysis on Fungicide Market in China - Pyraclostrobin and Azoxystrobin Enjoy Bright Future

CCM attends AgriBusiness Global

*CCM is attending AgriBusiness Global Trade Summit at Booth#25 in August 17-19 in Orlando, Florida, U.S.A. To better prepare for the Trade Summit, CCM is presenting a series of feature reports of China agrochemicals market.

The structure of China agrochemicals market is not different from that of the globe. In China, herbicides capture the most market share of the whole agrochemicals market, up to 37.4% in 2014, followed by insecticide, 26.7% and fungicide 25.5%.

With the changeable markets and policies all around the world, different kinds of agrochemicals have come and gone in recent years. In the coming days, CCM would analyze orderly on the market and tendency of fungicides, insecticides and herbicides, about the performance, growth and market share of different products.

Brands of multinational corporations enjoyed overwhelming advantages. The sales value of Bai Tai and Cabrio from BASF (pyraclostrobin as the active ingredient), Na Di Wen from Bayer (trifloxystrobin as the active ingredient) and Amistar Top from Syngenta (azoxystrobin as the active ingredient) ranked top 4, with over RMB100 million respectively.

Pyraclostrobin

Pyraclostrobin, found by BASF in 1993, is a compound chemical with the highest activity among all kinds of strobilurin fungicides. It was registered and entered the market in 2001.

In 2010, single and mixed formulations of pyraclostrobin were registered to apply in over 150 crops in more than 60 countries in the world. In 2014, the global sales value of pyraclostrobin products from BASF reached to USD1 billion, up 7.53% YoY.

Pyraclostrobin is popular with Chinese farmers thanks to its high efficacy, low toxicity, safety to non-target organisms and user- and environmental friendliness.

In the past three years, its consumptions went up rapidly, especially the consumption of pyraclostrobin of the brand Bai Tai. The sales volume of Bai Tai pyraclostrobin in 2014 was twice than that in 2012. Driven by such a big growth, the total sales value of pyraclostrobin reached to over USD120.7 million in China.

The patent of pyraclostrobin expired on 20 June 2015 and many enterprises got this active ingredient registered. By 20 Oct. 2015, there were 56 pyraclostrobin products registered in China. Among them, 24 were technical and the rest were single and mixed formulations.

Pyraclostrobin is highly toxic for aquatic organisms and virulent for rainbow trout and daphnia magna; thus, BASF is very careful in developing pyraclostrobin in the application on paddy fields. It is very rare for pyraclostrobin to get registered in applying in rice cultivation in the globe.

In Oct. 2015, BASF announced that BASF Seltima® pyraclostrobin 10% Capsule Suspension would enter China’s rice market, which is quite beneficial for the development of potential pyraclostrobin market. It is believed that the sales value of pyridine would increase sharply.

Azoxystrobin

Azoxystrobin is a very popular product in fungicides. Being one of Syngenta’s key insecticide products, azoxystrobin performed very well in the globe sales volume which reached to USD1.26 billion in 2012.

Since Chinese enterprises began to involve themselves in the azoxystrobin market in 2010, there were over 70 enterprises with registrations of azoxystrobin in China.

The market was quite steady in the past three years, especially the azoxystrobin products from Syngenta. Its Amistar Top and Amistar were well recognized by farmers, which helped enlarge azoxystrobin market.

However, with more and more enterprises entering the market, price of azoxystrobin kept falling since 2011, with azoxystrobin TC lower than USD30,077/t.
